Work Experience and Work-based Learning
One of the distinctive characteristics of the Young Apprenticeship Programme is the opportunity to undertake extensive work experience. It is expected that work experience or work-based learning should be of a high standard.
This should amount to:
· 50 full days off-site work experience placement spread over the course of the 2 years of study
· consistent supervision and guidance by suitably trained and qualified employees in the appropriate field of study
· assurance that the quality of the placement will be suitable in terms of appropriate health and safety, child protection and insurance cover
What do young people gain from learning in the workplace?
· Prepares young people with the skills that they will genuinely need in their future careers;
· Develops skills and knowledge relevant to their vocational studies;
· Shadow and observe other employees, gain hands-on work experience;
· Gather evidence of their growing competence by building up a portfolio of work;
· Learn about health and safety in the workplace;
· Understand what makes a good employee;
· Develop social skills, personal organisation and team-work.
Students are supported on programme by a mentor recruited by their home institution. It is part of the mentor’s role to visit students on course and support their progress. Mentors ensure that students are aware of their responsibilities in participating in offsite provision and liaise with school, parents, tutors and the local authority if there are any concerns.
Schools/Colleges continue to have overall responsibility for registered pupils participating in the programme.
